A probabilistic analysis of a leader election algorithm

چکیده

A leader election algorithm is an elimination process that divides recursively into tow subgroups an initial group of n items, eliminates one subgroup and continues the procedure until a subgroup is of size 1. In this paper the biased case is analyzed. We are interested in the cost of the algorithm, i.e. the number of operations needed until the algorithm stops. Using a probabilistic approach, the asymptotic behavior of the algorithm is shown to be related to the behavior of a hitting time of two random sequences on [0, 1].

The Asymmetric Leader Election Algorithm with swedish stopping: A probabilistic analysis

We study a leader election protocol that we call the Swedish leader election protocol. This name comes from a protocol presented by L. Bondesson, T. Nilsson, and G. Wikstrand (2007). The goal is to select one among n > 0 players, by proceeding through a number of rounds. If there is only one player remaining, the protocol stops and the player is declared the leader. Otherwise, all remaining pla...

Variations on Itai-Rodeh Leader Election for Anonymous Rings and their Analysis in PRISM

We present two probabilistic leader election algorithms for anonymous unidirectional rings with FIFO channels, based on an algorithm from Itai and Rodeh [Itai and Rodeh 1981]. In contrast to the Itai-Rodeh algorithm, our algorithms are finite-state. So they can be analyzed using explicit state space exploration; we used the probabilistic model checker PRISM to verify, for rings up to size four,...

Analytical Approach to Some Problems Involving Order Statistics

Order statistics, such as the distribution of the maximum of n random variables, are usually studied from a probabilistic point of view. This talk presents an analytical approach that can be applied to a sequence of independent random variables, and to dependent variables. Applications include statistics on digital structures, the analysis of a leader election algorithm, and an extension of pro...

Leader Election in Anonymous Rings: Franklin Goes Probabilistic

We present a probabilistic leader election algorithm for anonymous, bidirectional, asynchronous rings. It is based on an algorithm from Franklin [22], augmented with random identity selection, hop counters to detect identity clashes, and round numbers modulo 2. As a result, the algorithm is finite-state, so that various model checking techniques can be employed to verify its correctness, that i...
